Lamb and Dog (羊と犬, Hitsuji to Inu) is the 95th episode of the D.Gray-Man anime adaptation.
Short Summary[]
The Generals and Branch Chiefs have a meeting with Director Lvellie, Komui and Link, where Cross Marian, the Ark, and the 14th are discussed. Cross is questioned and gives his approval for Allen to be investigated. Lvellie orders them to prepare for using the Ark.
Long Summary[]
Allen reminsces over creating coded letters with Mana. In the present day, Allen sits in the piano room, worrying over the ramifications, while he hears the lullaby playing in his head.
Meanwhile at Black Order HQ, Director Lvellie from the Central Agency and his attendant Link arrive for a meeting with the Branch Chiefs and Generals. Lvellie says he's been looking forward to being able to put Cross to the question. Link summarizes the investigation into Cross's whereabouts and actions after he went missing. Apparently 4 years ago, Cross was assigned the mission to destroy the Akuma plant; he went missing after that. He infiltrated the Ark while the other Exorcists fought the Clan of Noah, and found the Akuma plant. Cross then joined the fight and had Allen control the Ark to avoid its destruction. After successfully cancelling the download and stealing the Ark and egg, Cross returned to HQ.
Lvellie said they were worried over Cross because of his disappearance and silence, saying they don't want to doubt one of their own; Cross tries to say that he stayed hidden for the infiltration mission because he didn't know who or where the Earl's underlings are. Cross tries to say it all went well because of his secrecy, but Lvellie counters that he can only say that because his mission was a success. He has Link list the rules that Cross violated: Keeping in touch regularly, also in emergencies to ask for instructions, report money spent, etc. Lvellie cuts him off and says normally Cross would be punished severely, but this time they'll let it go.
Apparently this was a decision made by the Great Generals and Central Agency together. Lvellie says this war has been going badly, but now they've had a small victory with preventing the Heart from being taken and gaining control of the Ark as well as preventing Exorcist deaths and dealing damage to the enemy. Even the production of Akuma has been temporarily stopped.
Lvellie asks Komui to have the Science Section prepare right away to start using the Ark. Bak objects, saying it has many mysteries as it was used by the Earl's forces for the last 7000 years. Bak wants them to investigate, but Lvellie overrules him, saying they don't exist in order to protect Exorcists, but in order to win the crusade against the Earl.
Komui realizes they have no choice but to obey; defy and they'll be crushed as heretics. Komui thinks on his resolve to protect the Exorcists, who the higher-ups see only as expendable sacrifices.
Lvellie brings up the next topic of concern, Allen's loyalties. He demands that Allen be subjected to an inquisition. Bak is horrified, thinking that means certain torture and death for Allen. Renny interjects, asking why Lvellie wants to submit one of their apostles to such a thing. Malcolm says they need to investigate to see if Allen is dangerous or not.
Lvellie raises the question of why Allen was able to operate the Ark, asking Cross. He tries to say humans can do anything when their life is on the line, but Lvellie realizes Cross is underestimating him. He says that right after receiving the mission to destroy the egg, Cross took Allen in as an apprentice. After sending Allen to the Order, Cross went AWOL.
Lvellie suggests that it was the 14th's will, and that Allen must have the player's qualifications given by the 14th. Cross is stunned to hear this. He realizes they knew the plant was inside the Ark and sent Cross with that mission on purpose. Lvellie asks about his relation to the 14th and if Allen is on the Earl's side or not.
Nansen, Fermi and Epstain object, saying Allen is one of their comrades. Lvellie says Allen is a dangerous heretic and that they must remain a pure army of God. He raises what happened with Suman as an example of why.
In the medical ward, Lenalee worries over Allen, and Miranda reassures her. Meanwhile Reever and the other scientists are working overtime to prepare to use the Ark due to the instructions from Lvellie. Lavi and Kanda sneak out to try and visit Allen but are dragged back by the head nurse.
Komui objects as they have not been briefed on the 14th or "player" and insists this line of questioning be dropped and explanations be provided in writing later. Lvellie says he's attending the meeting with full authority from the Great Generals and Central Agency; Cross tells him to investigate Allen all he likes.
Cross is ordered to stay at the Order under watch, and have Link shadow Allen 24/7. Komui panics over what this means for Allen. In the piano room, Allen worries over whether he's the one making decisions or if this path was laid out for him by another.
