Episode 97

Attack on Headquarters (本部襲撃, Honbu Shūgeki) is the 97th episode of the D.Gray-Man anime.

Short Summary[]

Lulu Bell and Level 3s invade Lab 5 to take back the Egg. Skulls appear to convert scientists into new Skulls. Allen and Bookman enter the fray, fighting the Akuma. Lenalee tries to go see Hevlaska but is locked up with Lavi.

Long Summary[]

In the underground waterway, Cross's caretakers return to HQ with a bottle of alcohol that cost three months wages. Their boat bumps into something and they discover Andrew Nansen's corpse.

Meanwhile in Lab 5, Lulu Bell pierces Johnny and detransforms, summoning an Ark gate teeming with Level 3s to block the doorway. In the cafeteria, Allen's eye reacts to the presence of Akuma, and he travels to Lab 5 with Link, Lavi, and Bookman, only to find the door blocked. The exorcists try unsuccessfully to break past the gate. Link realizes they must have come for the egg, and tells Allen to follow him. Bookman has Lavi inform the others instead of coming along, since he'd be useless with his Innocence broken.

Inside the lab, Lulu Bell listens to the egg pulsing and is relieved it's undamaged. The Akuma have laid out the injured scientists on the floor, ready for the Skulls. Johnny wakes up and has Bak take his headphones, which are tuned in to a radio Reever has. Reever says they can't communicate with anyone outside the lab, and they're working on talismans.

Three Skulls exit the Ark gateway, and they start to check the researcher's brains for new potential Skulls. The Akuma kill anyone marked as worthless. Bak and Reever cry as their fellow scientists are killed, but Bak reminds him that Allen's eye will surely detect the Akuma and not to lose hope. Tup asks the Skull what they're doing, and the Skull explains that they're creating replacement Skulls since someone (Cross) killed a bunch of them recently.

The Skull decides Tup's brain is a good one and casts a spell to turn him into a new Skull. Johnny is in tears seeing what happened to his friend. As the Skull checks the next scientist, Reever shoots him in the head with a revolver, stepping out and introducing himself. Reever offers himself up to the Skull instead of his subordinates. The Skull gladly accepts, saying Reever will be the second Skull, but as he starts the spell Allen arrives from an Ark gate and cuts the Skull in two with his sword, saving Reever.

Allen and Lulu Bell recognize each other, and Allen thinks back to his previous encounters with her. Allen is outraged at what's been done to the scientists; Lulu Bell declares that the Earl is angry, and she'll be taking the egg back. Bookman comes through the white Ark gate and assists Allen in fighting; Lulu Bell orders the Akuma not to let the Exorcists near the egg. Reever asks Allen to avenge his colleagues' deaths. Allen cuts down numerous Level 3s.

In her room, Lenalee remembers what Hevlaska recently said about her Innocence evolving and the impact it could have on her lifespan. Her Golem informs her of an enemy attack; elsewhere other golems inform Generals to come to where the Ark gate is open along with Marie and Miranda. Chaozii is with Kie, Maosa and the other Finders but they say Chaozii's weapon isn't ready yet so he can't join the fight. Upon hearing the news, Lenalee runs with the intention of going to Hevlaska. She notices how different her legs and feet feel without the painful Dark Boots. She meets up with Lavi and Komui, who locks the two Exorcists in Krory's sickroom. The headnurse says Krory hasn't woken yet so they're taking care of him. Komui says a barrier has been erected around his room so non-combatants can evacuate there.

Lenalee asks Komui to let her see Hevlaska. When he asks how she plans to synchronize, she mentions the experiments she once witnessed to try and create Exorcists. Komui objects but Lenalee insists the Innocence is testing her and should respond if she risks her life.

Komui and Lenalee can't see eye to eye; the two siblings reach out to each other. Komui isn't ready to send her to Hevlaska yet. Komui is informed that Marie and Miranda have arrived; he says to keep looking for Chaozii and Kanda. Lvellie watches, and Link contacts him. Lvellie doesn't mind that Link decided to let Allen use the Ark. He tells Link that the egg is the most important priority.

Allen and Bookman keep fighting the Level 3s, but the remaining Skull continues converting scientists into new Skulls. Lulu Bell tells the Akuma to block the Exorcists until they're able to steal back the egg and retreat. Lulu Bell opens a gate underneath the egg, declaring her intent to take it back.
